One building energy management system across 26 locations.
FMC has spent 15+ years installing, expanding, and maintaining Trend BEMS controls across L.L. Bean's retail, office, manufacturing, and distribution buildings.

The complaint.
Dozens of buildings, one HVAC supervisor responsible for all of them.
L.L. Bean is an internationally recognized outdoor clothing and equipment brand. From its start in Freeport, Maine, in 1912, the company has grown, and so has its real estate: dozens of retail and outlet stores, office buildings, and manufacturing and distribution centers across New England and beyond.
Tom Leslie, the HVAC supervisor, oversees all of these sites. His job: keep HVAC running efficiently in every building type while keeping customers, retail staff, office workers, and manufacturing personnel comfortable. That takes a way to monitor and manage energy use across the whole portfolio.
What stood in the way
- Retail, outlet, office, manufacturing, and distribution sites
- A footprint spread across New England and beyond
- One HVAC supervisor accountable for all of it
- Every building type with its own comfort demands
- No single way to monitor energy use across the portfolio
What we did.
Trend BEMS, proven at one site, then rolled out to the rest.
L.L. Bean partnered with FMC Technologies to put Trend Building Energy Management System (BEMS) technology across its expanding facility footprint. The rollout was phased on purpose: prove the system at one site first, then repeat it, keeping installs consistent between sites and occupants comfortable.
How the rollout ran
- Trend BEMS proven at the data center first
- That install used as the template for everywhere else
- Custom interface graphics built around L.L. Bean's operations
- Every system commissioned for performance and comfort
- Installs kept consistent from site to site
FMC deployed Trend BEMS first at L.L. Bean's data center, using Trend controllers and third-party building control devices to integrate and centralize HVAC control. That install became the template for the rest of the portfolio.
FMC configured the system, built custom user interface graphics around L.L. Bean's operations, and commissioned every system to confirm performance and occupant comfort.
From the data center, FMC rolled Trend BEMS out to 25 more L.L. Bean locations: retail, office, and manufacturing. Each deployment kept the systems consistent between sites and the buildings comfortable.
The result.
Twenty-six locations on one system, fifteen years on.
From the first install at the data center, FMC went on to support L.L. Bean's expanding footprint. For over 15 years, FMC and Tom Leslie have expanded, updated, and maintained the Trend BEMS infrastructure as the portfolio grew.
The plainest measure of the result: the arrangement is still running.
Where it goes from here
- One system covering every building type in the portfolio
- New sites added as the footprint keeps expanding
- Infrastructure updated and maintained as it ages
- A working relationship now past its fifteenth year
“With a fast-growing real estate portfolio, it's important to be able to monitor and manage energy use and ensure that each building is operating optimally while keeping customers, staff, and visitors comfortable. We recognized this early on in our expansion program and have worked closely with FMC Technologies for over 15 years.”
Running more buildings than you can watch?
One building or twenty-six, the first step is the same: show us a site and we'll tell you what we'd do with it.
